What is Sparkburn Hotrods’ restoration process?

First, the vehicle is torn down and what we call “bagged and tagged.”

Once tear down is complete, the car goes to the sand blaster. In some cases, this step is not necessary, so please do not worry if you do not see this on your estimate. We are not skipping a step; this step just does not apply to you. 

The vehicle will return from the sand blaster and the first coat of epoxy primer is applied. The application of the epoxy is immediate because the vehicle is now bare metal from blasting. The epoxy prevents any surface oxidation (surface rust) from developing. At this time all sheet metal is assessed. If there is a need to order parts after sheet metal assessment, you will receive a change order estimating the cost and labor for the change. Finally, all metal and body work occurs during this stage.

If you are looking for a show car level restoration, panel gapping and custom metal work takes place at this stage.  This is done by the hour. 

After completion of metal and body work, a second coat of epoxy is applied.  The car is blocked and primed again with a urethane primer. The urethane primer prevents sand scratches.

Finally, the car is ready for paint and clear.

Once the car is cleared, polishing takes place. We polish all body panels individually to avoid any polishing compound build-up in the body panel gaps. 

Once polishing is complete, reassembly happens. And then, just like magic, you have a HOTROD! 

How do I get an estimate?

What happens when I accept my estimate?

Once you have accepted the estimate, you will receive a contract for work with additional introductory paperwork.  Once these are signed, a deposit will be requested. Deposit amounts are based on the up-front needs to start the restoration. We bill on a biweekly basis.  If there are any changes to the scope of work from the original estimate during the course of the restoration, you will receive a change order reflecting parts and estimated labor for the changes. The change order will need to have a signature prior to work proceeding. 

What are Sparkburn Hotrods’ labor rates?

$65.00 an hour for restoration work, $95.00 an hour for fabrication work, and $35.00 an hour for support services.

What types of products does Sparkburn Hotrods use?

We use aviation epoxy due to its coverage and performance, but also its affordability in the restoration process.  Urethane primer is used to prevent sand scratches.  For base coat or single stage, we use urethane paint to bond to the urethane primer.  Finally, we use top-quality-grade clear paint for color depth and longevity of the paint on the car. 

How long will my restoration take? 

Each restoration is different and the timeframe to completion is dependent on the volume of work needing done. Once the work to be done is agreed upon, an estimated timeframe will be given.  Please know that should a change order take place, it will alter the timeframe of the restoration’s completion.
